Prevention Services

The Cumberland-Perry Drug & Alcohol Commission offers community programs for families and school programs for kids, all at no cost to participants. These proven programs use interactive games, activities, videos, and discussions, with options ranging from a single session to 18 lessons.

Community Based Programs for Families

Strengthening  Families Program (Families with kids ages 10-14) 

  • Youth & parents/caregivers attend together.
  • Seven weekly sessions.
  • Family meals are provided each week.
  • Parents/caregivers learn how to clarify expectations, use appropriate discipline, manage strong emotions and communicate more effectively.
  • Youth learn skills including peer pressure resistance.
  • Together, families practice family meetings, define values, resolve conflict, solve problems and just as importantly – have fun!

Additional program information

Guiding Good Choices (Parents/Caregivers with kids ages 9-14)

  • Can be provided online or in-person.
  • Five weekly sessions.
  • For parents/caregivers only but youth invited to 5th session. 
  • Designed to prepare parents/caregivers for the adolescent years and to teach parents/caregivers how to support their youth in successfully resisting drugs.

School Based Programs

Botvin Life Skills (3rd - 12th grade)

  • 5-18 lessons dependent on grade level.
  • Addresses factors leading teens to use substances by teaching a combination of health information, general life skills, and drug resistance skills.

Catch My Breath (5th - 12th grade) 

  • Four lessons with optional 5th lesson on cannabis.
  • An e-cigarette/vaping prevention program that teaches youth about vaping, potential harms, advertising techniques, and refusal skills. 
  • Multiple supplemental lessons for STEM. Humanities and PE.
  • Extensive parent/caregiver resources.

Kids Teens, & Technology (3rd - 8th grade)

  • 3rd - 4th grade (one lesson), 6th-8th grade (two lessons).
  • Age-appropriate education on screen safety, digital citizenship, gaming, and gambling.

Too Good for Drugs (Kindergarten - 12th grade)

  • Can also be offered in community, e.g., camps or after school programs.
  • Ten lessons across all grades, number of sessions flexible for out-of-school programs. 
  • Prevents substance use through the development of social emotional skills and educating youth about the effects and consequences of substance use.
