Vector Control conducts an Adult Mosquito Control program responding to residential areas where high adult mosquito populations exist or have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Routes are drawn to mitigate mosquito populations that have reached the viral threshold set by the state. There are specific mosquito species that are more likely to carry West Nile, so our treatments are geared more towards lessening their presence in an area to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus where we have already found positives. Spraying is scheduled evenings, dusk- to 11 pm- when this species of mosquito (culex) is active, and pollinators are less active. The control program uses an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) spray which disperses fine droplets (25 micron size) into the air. The droplet size is sufficient to affect flying mosquitoes, yet small enough to not effect other night flying insects. As the droplets drift, they are absorbed on contact with the flying mosquitoes. Droplets are subsequently broken down by sunlight (UV). Adult mosquito control is the last step of our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan- |

Ideally, you may wish to avoid being outside at the time your area is being sprayed. The spray nozzle angled upward, and droplet sizes are intended for the material to rise and travel in a slight breeze. The operator will discontinue spraying within 50 feet of a passerby when possible.
Truck mounted Ultra Low Volume Spraying is used to distribute adult mosquito product to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The spray material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and negligible impact to non-target insects and the environment. |
