What is Project 25
Project 25 (P25) was developed in 1989 and has evolved with time and technology to be the leading nationwide standard today and will carry us into the future. Project 25 allows for improved inter-operable solutions, both within our county and when assisting contiguous counties.
Long Range Planning
Long range planning to replace the aging OpenSky Radio System began in 2016. This prudent planning was designed to avoid mission critical failure, include end-users throughout the system design and to procure optimum financial opportunities.
Timeline
The tentative timeline to transition to the new Motorola ASTRO P25 Phase II Trunked 800 MHz Public Safety Radio System is the ladder part of 2025. Cumberland County has opted to join the South-Central Inter-County Communications Network (SCICNet) that is comprised of now four (4) counties. Dauphin, Adams, Franklin, and Cumberland. SCICNet is a regional radio system that all counties will share infrastructure equipment and maintenance costs. By joining the regional radio system users will experience better interoperability and ease of navigating various talk groups and systems.
Currently the county is finishing up site construction. The new radio system will have 19 tower sites. All sites are projected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Along with the new radio system, a new paging system will be deployed with two options for users to choose from. P25 two tone voice paging, and alpha-numeric paging.
