Medication Disposal

Medication disposal has emerged as a growing concern in recent years as studies continue to find trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in drinking water supplies across the country, and as abuse of prescription medications commonly found in homes continues to climb.

Cumberland County Recycling and Waste, in conjunction with the Cumberland-Perry Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, began addressing medication disposal in 2008 by holding drop-off events where residents could bring their unwanted medications for disposal. The historical results of the program are presented below.

Eventually, these drop-off events were suspended in lieu of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) national prescription drug take-back events which began being held in the fall of 2010. In 2014, the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office launched the installation of secure medicine return boxes throughout Cumberland County.  A listing of collection locations and medication disposal guidelines are available from Cumberland-Perry Drug & Alcohol Commission.
