[ARCHIVED] Magic tricks spark children’s imagination

Giggles echoed through the Shippensburg Public Library last Tuesday as community members enjoyed an entertaining evening of magic and comedy.

With quick wit and skillful illusions, magician Mike Rose entertained both children and adults as part of the library’s summer reading program. More then 120 attended “Dreams, Schemes and Magic Things” last Tuesday.

“He got the loudest laughs yet,” Sysha Irot, director of youth services, said.

A popular performer at area libraries, Rose’s witty banter kept audience members of all ages on their toes, and children enjoyed being picked as volunteers. In addition to his magic tricks and comedic skills, Rose integrated library books and educational concepts in the program.

“It was a lot of fun,” Trish Estep, Chambersburg, said.

Luckily enough, two of her sons were chosen to participate in the performance. Her younger son, Derek, 5, helped Rose make objects disappear and then reappear.

“My boys really seemed to enjoy it,” she said. “We really enjoy coming every Tuesday night.”

Tuesday evening’s are for kids at the library, and community members are encouraged to attend the free programs, Irot says.

“We hope to get more people through the library doors with these free Tuesday evening programs,” she said. “Kids can participate in our summer reading program or enjoy the programs.”

Tonight native and exotic bugs are sure to delight when Ryan “Bugman” Bridge brings his diverse insect collection to the library. Weather permitting, the program will be held outside, Irot says.

“Kids will get to see creepy, crawly things and have the opportunity to touch hissing cockroaches,” Irot said.

Many of the bugs that the “Bugman” brings are ones kids have never seen, but he will also display several native bugs that some have never seen, she added.

No registration is needed to participate in the Tuesday programs. For more about the summer reading program, visit www.shipreads.org.
