High mosquito populations are being generated by recent rainfall.
Floodwater is difficult to address, since that water covers such larger areas and is temporary, therefore not normally prone to be mosquito habitat.
How addition rain does affect the mosquito population is to fill artificial habitat around the home.
Therefore, Vecor Control is focusing on treating pre-identified, known habitat such as woodland ponds, retention areas, and the like for mosquito larva.
Homeowners however, can play a vital role in identifying artificial habitat on their property and in neighborhoods. There are many objects around the home which may contain water providing habitat for mosquitoes. Artificial water habitats include but are not limited to:
Discarded containers, buckets, yard toys
Bird baths,
Ornamental ponds,
Pool covers sunken
Clogged roof gutters, storm drains
Unused uncovered boats, wheelbarrows,
Ceramic pots that are empty
The simplest and most economical solution is to empty the water from the container and render it so that it will not hold water again. If that is not possible, there are retail products that the homeowner can purchase at a lawn and garden store to place in the water that will inhibit mosquito growth. A listing of some products is available on the Vector Control Webpage.
Nightly mosquito treatments for adult mosquitoes cannot begin until we have dryer, more stable weather.
