Linda K. Rice, Bosler Memorial Library director, recently received the 2012 Service to Mankind Award from the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club.
The award is the highest honor that Sertoma can bestow on a non-member. It recognizes people who make a significant volunteer contribution to those in need.
In her 28 years at Bosler, Rice led the library through three major capital campaigns, mostly recently the $6.5 million Building a Better Bosler Campaign.
This latest campaign doubled the size of the library, with an addition and renovations scheduled for completion in January.
During this campaign, Rice contacted the local Sertoma Club and spoke at one of its meetings. The club contributed $10,000 towards the purchase of electronic bulletin boards so that even those who cannot hear will be able to see what programs are being offered at the library.
"Throughout her career Linda has made an impact on literally thousands of people throughout Cumberland County by making Bosler Memorial Library welcoming, accessible and equipped with the resources they need to improve their lives," said Sandy Kern, former Bosler Library development officer.
"She has transformed this public library into more than just a place to check out books," Kern added. "It’s the center of the Carlisle community."
Rice has announced that she will retire in June 2013.
