CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) — Cumberland County marked its 275th anniversary today.

The county celebrated at the Veterans Memorial Courtyard in Carlisle. Over the years, the county has had several notable moments, including Benjamin Franklin’s successful negotiations of the Indian Treaty of Carlisle, plus the signing of the Declaration of Independence by three local attorneys in 1776.

“I think days like today are important because we do get caught up in our day-to-day,” said Carlisle native James Griffith. “We are concerned with today’s events and it’s nice to have something to remember that the community is important, and I would hope this event also helps carry the message that this is a welcoming community.”

In 1750, Cumberland County had a population of 3,000, and it’s now one of the state’s fastest-growing counties, with more than 270,000 residents today.
