[ARCHIVED] Mandatory Water Conservation Order

Mandatory Water Conservation Order Issued for Mechanicsburg Area

UPDATE (Oct. 20, 2023)
The mandatory water conservation notice issued by Pennsylvania American Water remains in effect for customers in our Mechanicsburg water system. The water is safe to use and drink as normal, but we are asking customers to continue reducing water usage by 10-15% until further notice. We are working with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to determine when water from the Conodoquinet Creek will be safe to use again and our Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant can resume normal operations. When conditions improve, customers will be notified through our automated emergency notification system that the mandatory conservation notice is lifted. In the meantime, we will continue providing updates, as needed, through the notification system and on the Alerts page of our website at www.amwater.com/paaw/alerts.

UPDATE (Oct. 18, 2023)
The mandatory water conservation notice issued by Pennsylvania American Water yesterday remains in effect for customers in our Mechanicsburg water system. The water is safe to use and drink as normal. Yesterday, we took our Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant offline in response to contamination of the Conodoguinet Creek. As a result, we are asking customers to continue reducing water usage by 10-15% until further notice. Production has been increased at our West Shore Water Treatment Plant, which also serves the Mechanicsburg system, and we have opened emergency interconnections with two neighboring water providers to help meet the system’s water demand. We are working with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to determine when water from the Conodoquinet Creek will be safe to use again. When conditions improve, customers will be notified through our automated emergency notification system that the mandatory conservation notice is lifted. In the meantime, we will continue providing updates, as needed, through the notification system and on the Alerts page of our website at www.amwater.com/paaw/alerts.

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 17, 2023)
- Pennsylvania American Water issued a mandatory water conservation order for approximately 42,000 customer connections in its Mechanicsburg water system this morning, including parts of Silver Spring Township, Hampden Township, Lower Allen Township, Lemoyne Borough, Wormleysburg Borough, East Pennsboro township, New Cumberland Borough, Fairview Township, Shiremanstown Borough, Camp Hill Borough, and Newberry Township. Customers are asked to temporarily limit their water use to essential purposes only, with a targeted use reduction between 10-15%.

The mandatory conservation order follows an unexpected incident affecting the company’s Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant water source. Pennsylvania American Water is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Additionally, the company has increased production at its West Shore Water Treatment Plant, which also serves the Mechanicsburg water system, and opened an emergency interconnection with a neighboring water system.

Pennsylvania American Water is notifying affected customers through its automated emergency notification system. The company will provide updates, as needed, and will notify customers when the conservation order is lifted. For more information, visit pennsylvaniaamwater.com and area click on ‘Alerts’.
