The Cumberland County Landfill must maintain 265,000 tons of available space for county waste under its contract with the county, according to Justin Miller, recycling and waste coordinator for Cumberland County.
“Basically, we just have to ensure that there is adequate capacity for waste in the county if needed,” Miller said.
County officials do not apportion where waste has to go, however. According to the DEP, most of Cumberland County’s municipal waste is hauled to the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex in Harrisburg, which operates a waste-to-energy incinerator.
