[ARCHIVED] Cumberland County working to control mosquito population

Vector Control Mosquito Control

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) - Mosquitoes can carry a number of diseases including West Nile virus, which is why Cumberland County Vector Control is already keeping a close eye on them.

To nab those pesky mosquitoes from Mid-April to November, Marcus Snyder, a public health technician, monitors traps in the county.

"The first thing you do is lay down the pan, and then what I like to do is set the trap on next," said Snyder. "The mosquitoes go to lay the eggs on the water here. With that shut and the fan blowing out this direction, it creates a suction."

That vacuum pulls adult female mosquitoes out of the water and into a net, trapping them. They're then frozen and sent off.

"The lab tests them in pools to see if we have any West Nile in the area," said Snyder.
